Nominations for Standing Committee Members
PRESS RELEASE: for immediate release
November 1996
Dear IFLA colleague,
In conformity with IFLA's Rules of Procedure, Art. 8.3, I now have the pleasure to invite you to submit nominations for members(s) of Standing Committee(s) of the Section(s) for which you are registered. The numbers of those Sections are listed on the enclosed nomination form. The corresponding names of the Sections are listed on the back of the form. The current composition of the Standing Committees are to be found in IFLA Directory 1996/97 (pp. 38-70).
Since the nomination of experts to be heading the work of IFLA's specialized Sections is an important part of the formal membership benefits, nominations can be only accepted from members whose dues for membership year 1996 have been paid in full.
To prepare your nomination, please refer to the enclosed Guidelines for the Nominations of Standing Committee Members for IFLA Sections, term 1997-2001, on the back of the nomination form.
The deadline of 1 March 1997 will be applied strictly. After that date, the situation for each Section will be analyzed. When nominations exceed the number of available seats on a given Standing Committee, a postal ballot will be conducted.
Please note that your nominee does not have to be an IFLA Member, nor does he/she have to work for an institution in IFLA membership to be nominated for a position in a Standing Committee. IFLA encourages the widest possible participation in these nominations, both to open up its professional groups to the world's leading experts, but also to strengthen links to non-IFLA institutions as part of a membership development effort.
As a member of IFLA, we encourage you to take a close look at this nomination process. In the framework of IFLA's new Medium-Term Programme, the members that will now be nominated and elected will have an important role to play in shaping IFLA's professional agenda and activities in years to come.
We particularly look forward to nominations for colleagues from IFLA's three Regional groupings (Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Asia and Oceania) in order for IFLA's wide geographical coverage also to be effectuated within the Standing Committees.
Leo Voogt
Secretary General of IFLA
Guidelines for the Nominations of Standing Committee Members for IFLA Sections, term 1997-2001
- Each Member registered for a Section may not nominate more than one candidate for the Standing Committee of that particular Section
- Nominations in writing and signed by a competent authority of the nominating Member must reach IFLA HQ not later than 1 March 1997. Please use the enclosed form.
- To be placed on the ballot, a candidate for election shall be nominated by:
- one Association Member or
- no fewer than two Institutional Members. These nominations may be sent separately.
- To be placed on the ballot, a nominee should have working knowledge of at least one language of the Federation, and should have reasonable expectation of attending meetings of the Standing Committee without cost to the Federation. IFLA's forthcoming conferences will be held in Copenhagen (31 August - 5 September 1997), Amsterdam (16-21 August 1998), Bangkok (19-28 August 1999) and Jerusalem (August 2000).
- Please also bear in mind that IFLA's Rules of Procedure give Standing Committee members the possibility to select up to 5 corresponding members to provide for experts from countries or geographical areas which would not otherwise be regularly represented. Corresponding members are entitled to participate and speak in Standing Committee meetings, but have no voting rights (Art. 8.3.17). This possibility allows interested persons to become involved without entering into a regular commitment to attend conferences.
- The nomination must be accompanied by:
- a statement of the nominee that he/she accepts the nomination
- a short statement of qualifications and present position
- a statement by the nominee that he/she can meet the requirements specified under item 4.
- Note that Standing Committee members have a maximum term of 8 years (4 + 4). After a first term ending in 1997, members can therefore be nominated again for a second term of four years.
