Committee on Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (CAIFE)

PRESS RELEASE: for immediate release
April 1996

In response to a letter sent by IFLA’s President, Robert Wedgeworth to all of IFLA’s national association members calling for nominations for the Executive Board’s Ad Hoc Committee on Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (CAIFE). The ED had a first discussion with Tony Evans during the December meeting during which the President announced the list of candidates, based on range of expertise and geographical coverage, to be approached for membership.

CAIFE is chaired by Tony Evans, President of the Commonwealth Library Association, and former member of the Executive Board. Warren Horton, member of the Executive Board, is the EB’s liaison person. Resource person appointed are Robert P. Doyle, former Director of the Library/Book Fellows Programme, ALA, USA and Ms Marianna Tax Choldin, USA.

CAIFE is charged with gathering membership opinion, reviewing expert advice and advising IFLA as to how it should implement its commitment to access to information and freedom of expression. CAIFE will avoid purely political issues, and would begin by categorizing types of problems which occur and which would fall under IFLA auspices. The Ad Hoc Committee will conduct its business via e-mail, fax and correspondence and is expected to complete its work in time to report to the IFLA Council in Copenhagen in August 1997. There will be formal meetings scheduled tin Beijing during the 62nd IFLA General Conference, one of which will be an Open Forum at which conference delegates may pose questions to the Committee and discuss the work of the Committee.
