Geography and Map Libraries Section

Theme: Mapping North America: A Graphic Journey through History

The Geography and Map Libraries Section invites the submission of proposals for papers to be presented at a two-hour session in Quebec City.

Topics of Interest

The emphasis of this Open Session will be on the stories that maps tell about the social, cultural, political, and economic landscape of a region as well as the changes that occurred in a region over a period of time. We invite papers that address such topics as toponyms, transportation routes, settlement patterns, land division, political boundaries, evolution of political empires, changes in the geographical knowledge of the new world, or similar topics.

Submission Deadlines

31 January 2008: Deadline for submitting a detailed one-page abstract with full author details.

1 March 2008: Notification of acceptance/rejection

15 May 2008: The full paper is due. The paper must be an original submission that has not been published elsewhere. The paper should not exceed 5,000 words (20 pages), include an abstract, and should be in English, or with an English translation attached.


The presentation should be a summary of the paper and should not exceed twenty minutes. An additional ten minutes will be allowed for questions and answers. At least one of the authors should be present to deliver the paper, preferably in English. Power Point presentations of the paper are welcome.

Travel and Attendance Costs

Please note that the expenses of attending the Quebec City conference (including travel and conference fees) will be the responsibility of the author. The Geography and Map Libraries Section has no funds to subsidize prospective speakers.
