World Library and Information Congress: 72nd IFLA General Conference and Council

"Libraries: Dynamic Engines for the Knowledge and Information Society"

20-24 August 2006, Seoul, Korea

Call for Papers

Statistics and Evaluation Section and Division I: General Research Libraries

Quality measures on a national scale

This is the first call for papers for a Program sponsored jointly by the IFLA section for Statistics and Evaluation and Division I General Research Libraries at the World Library and Information Congress / 72nd IFLA Conference, Seoul, 20-24 August 2006.

Quality or performance measures for libraries have been developed and tested worldwide and have been described in handbooks and ISO standards. From being applied in single libraries, the development has gone to sets of such indicators being used by groups of libraries on a regional or even national scale, often for benchmarking purposes. Such projects have been started in the last years by public libraries as well as academic libraries.

The session will show examples where groups of libraries have found consensus on using the same set of indicators on a regular basis. Papers should show the results and success of such projects and problems that occurred in the benchmarking process. If projects are just starting, the decision process might be interesting.

The goal is to investigate how to identify measures of quality which will have broad applicability.

Proposals for papers should be in English and include an abstract of no longer than 200 words. Papers must be original; and if not written in English, have an English translation attached; and between 3000 and 6000 words in length.

Please submit proposals by 12 March 2006 to:
