Call for Papers

Reference and Information Services Section

Reference and Information Services Section invites the submission of proposals for papers to be presented at our two-hour open session

Theme:

"Marketing reference services in today's library - on-site and virtual"

Subjects of interest:

Marketing analysis
  • knowing our user populations, their information needs and interests
  • providing customized and personalized information service delivery based on analysis of clients' demands
  • determining user information literacy needs based on traditional and/or virtual reference services
Marketing promotion
  • controlling marketing hype, managing user expectations, and delivering quality services
  • using appropriate non-technical marketing language
Marketing segmentation
  • successful use of generic marketing approaches for general user population
  • effective use of customized/niche marketing
  • approaches for underserved user populations such as indigenous peoples, visible minorities and persons with disabilities
Marketing partnerships
  • cross-marketing of similar client communities with information service providers such as museums, archives, local community services, etc.
Evaluation of marketing
  • means of measuring effectiveness
  • analysis of input (cost/time) versus outcome/out turn
Marketing and staff
  • taking your staff with you: preparation, communication and support

Deadline for submitting a detailed one-page abstract and full author details is December 31, 2005. Late submissions will not be considered.

Papers must be original; written in English, or with an English translation attached, and should be a maximum of 20 pages, including the abstract.

Selected papers will be published on the IFLA website prior to the conference.

Papers must be submitted no later than May 1, 2006.

The selected presenters will be notified by end of February 2006.

Presentations at the open session will be a summary of the paper in English and should not exceed 20 minutes in length. There will be an open forum to allow audience interaction with the speakers, who should be fluent in English.
