Social and Cultural Activities

A varied programme of social and cultural events is planned for the delegates attending 70th IFLA General Conference and Council. Delegates will have the opportunity to visit some of Buenos Aires' places of interest, and at the same time will have the chance to meet with colleagues from other countries in informal settings.

Opening Session
The Opening Session will take place at Colon Opera House on Monday, August 23, in the morning.
The Colon Opera House, inaugurated in 1908, has earned its reputation for its unequalled acoustics, architectural beauty and musical tradition and is considered one of the most representative historic and cultural monuments of the city and the pride of every Buenos Aires city inhabitant, known as a "porteño". The most outstanding opera, ballet and local and international concert artists have performed on its famous stage (and continue to do so). A dome painted by Raúl Soldi, a famous Argentine painter, crowns the main hall. This artist describes it as "a spiral circle invaded by 51 characters, including the theatre spirits, which I was able to rescue from every corner..." We highly recommend taking a guided tour of this magnificent theatre.

Exhibition Opening and Reception
The Exhibition Opening will take place on Monday, August 23, 16.00 at Atlántico and Pacífico Halls, at Hilton Hotel (Conference venue). It will include a reception with drinks and canapés.

Opening Party
The Opening Party will be held on Tuesday, August 24 in the evening at Golden Center (Parque Norte), one of the most important and comprehensive centres in Buenos Aires, which offers all the necessary services to ensure an unforgettable reception.

Newcomers' Session
A special welcome will be organised for librarians who are attending IFLA Conference for the first time to make them feel "at home". More details will be sent to those who indicate being a 'newcomer' on the Registration Form.

Cultural Evening
On Wednesday, August 25 at 19.00 (time to be confirmed) all Congress attendees will enjoy a Cultural Evening at the Opera Theatre (Teatro Ópera, Av. Corrientes 860). There will be folklore and tango music, dancing and singing. A special night designed for you to thoroughly enjoy yourself.

Embassy Receptions (By Invitation)
Date: Thursday, August 26 in the evening.
Location: Individual Embassies
