Abstract:

In this paper, the authors present a project -- now in a developing phase -- which is being carried in the Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo (Santander, España). Within the project ISBD(ER) and EAD are combined as well as the International Standard Archival Description (General). It is a small project because of the not very large amount of archival material that is stored in the Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo; perhaps for that reason it could be result a good pilot project at least in the Spanish-speaking arena.

Paper

In this paper, the authors present a project -- now in a developing phase -- which is being carried in the Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo (Santander, España). Within the project ISBD(ER) and EAD are combined as well as the International Standard Archival Description (General) (ISAD(G)). It is a small project because of the not very large amount of archival material that is stored in the Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo; perhaps for that reason it could be result a good pilot project at least in the Spanish-speaking arena.

For the realization of the project, the Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo Librarian, Xavier Agenjo, counts with the help in the scientific outlook from María Luisa Martínez-Conde, Coordination Automation Office, National Library, Spain.

The phases of the project are:

  1. Conversion of the old "Inventario de Papeles" (Papers finding aid) of the Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo to ISAD(G) Standard. That "Inventario de Papeles", published by Rosa Fernández Lera and Andrés del Rey Sayagués in 1994 with the title "Catalogo-inventario de los manuscritos y papeles de la Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo, segunda parte", ISBN 84-605-0694-0, is currently available in the site of the Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo (http://www.unican.es/bibmp/inv.int.htm). To code the information, a version of the HoTMetal program was used and applied to some Word Perfect files.

Currently, the site of the Menéndez Pelayo is being migrating to the version 8 of FrontPage with the aim of using the data type definition (DTD) prescribed in the EAD DTD version 1.

  2. Simultaneously, the digitation of the documental series that conform the Papeles de la Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo Collection has been started. That collection is described in the "Inventario" previously quoted. The format used has been JPEG and the digitation tools a digital cenital camera with a 1,200 dpi resolution.

  3. Logically, the description of the different electronic resources conformed by the several archival series is an important part of the project and constitutes the Section Papeles de la Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo. They are eighteen series of a very mixed character. That will allow testing of the scope and limits of the ISBD(ER) as well the guidelines for the application of the ISBD to the component parts, a matter which in the authors' opinion needs to be extensively developed in the next version of the ISBD(ER).

The authors expect to finish the project in March 1999 and count on the help of the Fundación Tavera (http://www.tavera.com) which has a great amount of expertise in digitation. Among their projects we would cite the digitization of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, published by the Library of Congress and Fundación Mapfre América, former Fundación Tavera.
