He was born in 1910 in Wujiang District, Jiangsu Province, China. He entered Yenching Univ. and went on to the Graduate School of Tsinghua Univ., both in Beijing, to study sociology and anthropology, and got the degrees of B.A. and M. A. respectively. Afterwards, he enrolled in the London School of Economics and Political Science, and studied under Professor B. Malinowski, the “Father” of social anthropology. His doctoral dissertation “Peasant Life in China”, won him international esteem.
After returning to China, Prof. Fei taught and researched as a professor of sociology in Yunnan Univ., Tsinghua Univ., and a professor of anthropology in Institute of Central Nationalities. Due to historical reasons, his academic activities were impeded for almost twenty years until 1978; he restrained his work by training younger scholars in sociology and anthropology, and dedicated himself to the re-establishment of sociology along with the promotion of ethnology in China. From 1979 to the present, he has been a professor of sociology in Peking Univ.
As a sociologist, Professor Fei created his own original methodology which incorporates China’s traditional culture and regional diversities. For half a century he has introduced China’s social changes to the world and has been valued as the most distinguished sociologist and social anthropologist in China. Through the years, Professor Fei has strongly believed that academic activities should be the catalyst for further development of the Chinese society and his unfailing commitment to this belief has contributed to Chinese modernization and development.
His major works in English include:
Peasant Life in China, London, 1939
Earthbound China, Chicago, 1945
Toward a People’s Anthropology, Beijing, 1981
Rural Development in China, Chicago, 1989
His honors include:
Cummings Lectures of McGill Univ., Montreal, 1979
Malinowski Award, Society of Applied Anthropology Institute, London, 1981
Huxley Model, Royal Institute of Anthropology, London, 1981
Honorary Fellow, the London School of Economics and Political Science, London, 1982
Award of Britannica Encyclopedia, New York, 1987
Honorary Doctor of Literature, Univ. of Hong Kong, 1987
Grand Prize, the 4th Fukuoka Asian Culture Prizes, 1993
Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, 1994
He has been the President of China Sociological Association, 1979-1990; the Vice-president of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, 1983-1988; and now the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, PRC, 1988-present.
