Greetings!

With the new millennium, the Section officers are introducing the newsletter: Global Connections. As editor, I ask that you send news of interest to your colleagues across the medical library world. Lucretia McClure, Editor

Welcome to Boston

Plans for the 2001 meeting in Boston include a general session, co-sponsored with the Information Technology Section, on the theme of Telehealth: Information Technology Advancing World Health. A workshop and site visit, co-sponsored with the Section of Library Services for the Disadvantaged, will focus on the theme of Consumer Health Information: A Comprehensive Web-based Resource and a Consumer Health Center. All Section members will be invited to a reception hosted by the Medical Library Association at the newly-renovated Countway Library of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Projects

A list of print and electronic directories of biological and medical sciences libraries will soon be available in electronic format. The committee plans to expand and update the list regularly. In 1999, the Secretary/Information Officer, Rick Forsman, initiated a listserv via INFLANET as a communication tool for Section members and others interested in issues relating to biological and medical libraries. Submissions may be sent to rick.forsman@uchsc.edu. Instructions for joining the list are on the IFLA web site.

Another project of interest is the Blue Shield Project, an international group developing standards to save library materials during a military action or natural disaster. Contact has been made with the international committee to determine whether the Section can be of assistance in the project.

The 9th ICML

Chair Ysabel Bertolucci and Renee Bush announced that the 9th International Congress of Medical Librarianship will be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2005. Three bids were submitted to the Section in 1999 with the bid from BIREME being the choice of the committee.

The highly-successful 8th ICML was held in London July 2-5, 2000. Kudos to Tony McSean and his committees for the splendid conference. More than 1,400 individuals, representing 77 countries, attended.

Report from the Chair

Ysabel Bertolucci, Chair of the Section, reports a significant growth in membership, from 61 in 1999 to 71 in 2000. She has issued a call to all members to nominate an energetic colleague to become a member of the Standing Committee. There are exciting projects underway providing ways in which individuals can contribute to improving health sciences library practice throughout the world.

The Section financial report indicates that $938.13 is available in administrative funds. The members of the committee and their institutions have supported the ongoing expenses for the past two years.

She reports that the Standing Committee met twice in Bangkok and once in Jerusalem. The Section hosted a workshop and general session in Bangkok on the themes of Consumer Health Information and International Cooperation. Both were well received and gave ample opportunity for discussion.

Lois Ann Colaianni, former Associate Director of the National Library of Medicine, was the keynote speaker at the Section's program in Jerusalem. General theme of this session was International Cooperation.

Potential projects suggested during the meetings include the development of a core/standard list of consumer health books and websites that can be updated frequently; locating and developing health information for illiterate people, foundations and grant opportunities that fund consumer health information, and international cooperation for interlibrary lending.
