Bibliographic Database Applications Standard Icon Set.

Below are the proposed standard set of icons for use in Bibliographic Database Applications. These Icons are in the Public Domain and may be freely used by all. Home
Return directly to the Welcome page / screen
Menu
Display the Main Menu.
Change Language
Toggle between the native language of the site (represented by whatever is their flag), and English
Information
Display Information about this facility (eg database, search system).
Help
Display help on the current task.
Find
Look or search for a particular set of documents
Browse
Display an Index of access points (e.g. Authors ).
Thesaurus
Browse the thesaurus for search terms which match the given search string.
Limit
Reduce number of returned results by applying additional search criteria. ( e.g. Date of publication)
Location
Display information about the selected object's location (e.g. a URL for a web page, or a shelf number for a library book )
Move to first record
Move to the first record in the current set of records
Move to last record
Move to the last record in the current set of records
Forward
Move to the next record in the current set of records
Back
Move to the previous record in the current set of records
Fast Forward
Move forward a given number of records within the search set, or to the beginning of the next subset within the search set (the next 'page').
Fast Reverse
Move backward a given number of records within the search set, or to the beginning of the previous subset within the search set (the previous 'page').
Clear
Clear the current information. (e.g. eg a set of search results, or the current contents of a form)
Expand Display
Enlarge current display (eg to occupy the entire screen, in a windows application)
Contract Display
Reduce view of current information to fit in a window. ( Opposite of Expand display ).
Brief List
Display a brief list of current search results. ( e.g. results of the search in a concise format ).
Full record
Show all fields associated with a given document. (this can be thought of as the opposite of Brief List ).
Show / View / Display
Show the results of the current search. (Some systems will not automatically show results of a search but merely tell you the number of matched results ).
Print
Print the current item (eg screen, document or search set)
Save
Save or download search results to a file.

IconMeaning
Greater than
Retrieve items where search key is greater than a user assigned value.
Less than
Retrieve items where search key is less than a user assigned value.
Less than or Equal to
Retrieve items where search key is less than or equal to a user assigned value.
Greater than or Equal to
Retrieve items where search key is greater than or equal to a user assigned value.
Equal to
Retrieve items where search key is equal to a user assigned value.
NOT equal to
Retrieve items where search key is not equal to a user assigned value.
AND
Retrieve items in search for which both boolean expressions seperated by AND are true. All search keys separated by AND must be present.
OR
Retrieve items in search for which any of the boolean expressions seperated by OR are true. Only one of the search keys separated by OR need be present.
NOT
Retrieve items in search for which the negation of this boolean expression is true.
NEAR
Retrieve items in search where a keyword is within a specified number of words of another keyword.

Notes: The icons for ISBN and ISSN clash with the 'No language characters' rule. These icons were chosen as they convey their meaning clearer than a non character based icon and their meaning is pretty much internationally recognised. This same scheme of thought was applied to AND, OR, NOT and NEAR as most people are not aware of the mathematical symbols which represent them.
No copyright law restricts the use of these icons, so they may be used in any way by anyone.
