IFLA Medium Term Programme, 1998-2001

During 1996-1997, the professional groups of IFLA have the opportunity to establish their goals for the next four years. The achievement of these goals is the aim of the IFLA Medium Term Programme (MTP) 1998-2001. The collective MTP document tells the worldwide library community what IFLA is doing to advance the availability of information in today's environment. This is an important message for IFLA.

One of the strengths of IFLA and its organization is the diversity of issues treated by the many IFLA professional groups. While that continues, the IFLA Professional Board drafted the following statement to serve as IFLA's main focus for goals and activities.

IFLA's strategic direction over the next four years will focus on the electronic environment as it affects IFLA's objective to promote librarianship globally, particularly through the provision of equal access to information, literacy programmes, and preservation of the world's documentary heritage.

The MTP for each professional group is divided into three parts: The Scope, Goals for the period 1998-2001, Activities for the period 1998-1999. Shortly following the Beijing conference in 1996, the following Scope statement was approved for the Section on Preservation and Conservation:

The Section is concerned with the preservation of the world's documentary heritage. It provides an international forum for all types of libraries to exchange, develop and disseminate knowledge and experience dealing with theories, policies and practices for the preservation of all recorded knowledge, regardless of the storage medium. The Section maintains a close working relationship with the IFLA PAC Core Programme.

The following DRAFT goals and activities will be discussed at the Copenhagen conference during the business meetings of the Standing Committee of the Section on Preservation and Conservation. Comments on these goals and activities should be sent to the Secretary of the Standing Committee at the address given on the masthead of this Newsletter no later than August 15, 1997.

GOALS 1998-2001

  1. To facilitate the exchange of information and to promote other cooperative activities, particularly with the IFLA PAC Core Programme.

  2. To promote among library staff, library users and government an awareness of the importance of preservation in library management in order to preserve the world's cultural heritage.
