North American mirror of IFLANET launched

PRESS RELEASE
November 2002
IFLA HQ
The Hague, Netherlands

IFLA is pleased to announce that the IFLANET North American mirror site, hosted by Queens Borough Public Library, Jamaica, New York, USA, is now up and running. You can visit it at: http://ifla.queenslibrary.org/. This mirror site, an exact replica of IFLA's website, and of great significance to all our library partners world-wide, promises to be a very popular information resource for all those active in the field of information.

Launched in 1993, IFLANET has grown into one of the leading information and communication tools for the library and information profession. Access to this website is crucial for many professionals world-wide. IFLANET was hosted in the National Library of Canada until 2001 and since 2002 by INIST (Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique, France) the leading French document supply company.

Queens Borough Public Library steps in to offer IFLA its support

Since the transfer of the main site from Canada to France, IFLA has sought to provide better access to IFLANET for the North American continent. Queens Borough Public Library, through its Director, Gary Strong, offered its support to IFLA in establishing a mirror site for IFLANET in the United States, thereby creating additional channels of access to the information stored on IFLA's WWW-site.

Increased accessibility for IFLANET

Ross Shimmon, IFLA's Secretary General said "This is a very important step in making IFLANET more accessible. We hope to establish more mirror sites in the near future to join the existing one in Singapore and this new one in the USA. The development of a portfolio of mirror sites is crucial in improving the delivery of IFLA's services to the members of our networked community. We are greatly encouraged by the support of Queens Borough Public Library and look forward with them, and with IFLANET's host INIST, to sustaining and developing the role of IFLANET."

New stronghold for IFLA in the USA

Ms Christine Deschamps, President of IFLA, praised the initiative to launch an IFLA mirror web site at the United States and described it as a welcome opportunity not only to increase IFLA's visibility in North America, but to further involve the library community in IFLA's world-wide activities.

"As information specialists, we understand the importance of keeping information moving, regardless of political and geographic boundaries," said Gary E. Strong, Director of The Queens Borough Public Library. "Queens Library is pleased to increase the global accessibility of IFLA's important work."
