IFLA Beijing Conference well on track

PRESS RELEASE: for immediate release
March 1996

Exciting Early Results

  • By 1 March 1996, an unprecedented 300 pre-registrations were made for the IFLA Beijing Conference.
  • Most of the available exhibition space has already been sold - six months before the Conference.
  • A professional programme (including two guest lectures) which promises to be richer than ever before has been arranged.
  • An exciting social and cultural programme is being developed.
  • Internet will be accessible throughout the Conference.
  • Competitive hotel rates have been negotiated especially for IFLA delegates.

These are only some of the results announced during the recent planning visit for the IFLA General Conference at the end of August in Beijing.

IFLA Secretary General, Leo Voogt and Carol Henry, Executive Officer, have just returned from a successful seven-day visit to Beijing, China where they discussed the planning for IFLA's 62nd General Conference. During this visit meetings were held with the Secretary General and members of the China Organizing Committee, the Deputy Minister of Culture, representatives of the Organizing Committee of the ICA General Conference, and the General Manager and other staff members of the Beijing International Conference Center (BICC). A thorough inspection of the BICC and several hotels formed an integral part of the programme.

Large turn-out expected for IFLA '96

Planning for this IFLA General Conference is going remarkably well. Since the Istanbul meeting, IFLA's Organizing Committee has been able to re-negotiate hotel prices at very competitive rates. In total, 1600 rooms have been blocked in various price categories and it is estimated that these will all be taken in the months to come. Expectations for registrations are high, especially with several large delegations from the region being expected. An estimated 700 Chinese colleagues are expected to particpate.

Internet accessibility guaranteed

The Beijing International Conventional Center will prove to be a world class facility for an IFLA Conference. In recent months, enormous investments have been made in the area of computer hardware, guaranteeing Internet-accessibility for IFLA's delegates in August 1996. With current refurbishing underway and an envisaged revision of internal procedures for service, security and medical care, the BICC promises to be a most suitable and comfortable venue for the IFLA delegates.

IFLA's traditionally strong social programme will be proudly continued by IFLA's Chinese hosts, culminating in an official banquet offered by the Beijing City Government in the Great Hall of The People.
