What is IFLA?

IFLA

Founded in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1927 at an international conference, we shall celebrate our 75th birthday at our conference scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland in 2002. We now have 1735 Members in 153 countries around the world. IFLA was registered in the Netherlands in 1971. The Royal Library, the national library of the Netherlands, in The Hague, generously provides the facilities for the headquarters.

IFLA and the United Kingdom

The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (formerly the Library Association) and many libraries, organizations and institutions are members of IFLA, and take an active role in developing leadership and policy for the association. The goals of librarians - access to information, intellectual freedom, public awareness - all have global implications and likewise, what happens globally affects the libraries in the UK.
