Getting to Glasgow

Detailed information appears on www.seeglasgow.com

This includes details of the main line stations and the routes they serve, together with the long distance bus station at Buchanan Street. We are happy to provide further information if it is required – and there are additional details in the IFLA 2002 brochure, pages 20-23.

Airport Arrival

The majority of participants will be arriving by air into Glasgow International. We are happy to offer, courtesy of OCLC sponsorship, a free coach transfer service to your hotel (if included on our Accommodation List) or to the City Centre (if you have arranged accommodation independently).

This service will be operated, on our behalf, by Prestige Tours who will staff a Reception Desk which you will find near the escalators in the Domestic Arrivals Hall, a short walk within the same building from International arrivals. A plan of the airport can be viewed on www.baa.co.uk/glasgow

The Desk will be open from the first flight arrival on Friday 16 August until the last flight arrival on Sunday 18 August – and transfers will take approximately 1 hour.

Should the Desk be unstaffed at any point during these dates a contact telephone number will be on display.

Participants arriving outside these dates – or those preferring to travel independently – can use the public service transfer bus which operates at 20 minute intervals to Glasgow Central station and beyond and costs GBP 3.30.

White taxis are readily available and cost approximately GBP 20 to the City Centre or, more cheaply, telephone 0141 429 6666 from the Arrivals Hall and request a black City Cab to meet you at the signposted Meeting Point. These taxis cost a fixed rate of GBP 15.20.

Glasgow Prestwick passengers should take the train from the terminal building station to Glasgow Central. Tickets, price GBP 5.00, are purchased on the train and the journey time is approximately 45 minutes.

Further details are available at www.gpia.co.uk

Getting from your accommodation to the SECC

By Rail:

There is a direct rail link from Glasgow city centre to the SECC. Three railway stations on the link in the city centre are Argyle Street, Central Station (Low Level), and Anderston Station. Trains depart at 15 – 20 minute intervals and take 3 – 5 minutes. Allow 30 minutes for your journey. The single ticket price is GBP 0.95.

Note: if departing from Central Station follow ‘Low Level’ signs and descend on the escalator situated between platforms 11 and 12 (adjacent Virgin Trains Customer Lounge). There is a Ticket Office located on the Lower Level.

Transport links to the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC)

The rail option is best, even if some travelling has to be done in the city centre.

Ask hotel concierge if Bus Route 64 is an option from your location.

By Underground:

The Underground system offers a less convenient but usually reliable alternative. The destination station is Cessnock Street and necessitates a 15 minute signposted brisk walk to the SECC via the Science Park and Bell Bridge. The single ticket price is GBP 0.90.

By Road:

Leave the M8 at junction 19. Travel west along the Clydesdale Expressway and enter at the West Car Park. Permanent SECC motorway gantry signs are prominently positioned for your guidance. Car parking (6,000 spaces) is GBP 3 per vehicle daily.

By Bus:

First Glasgow route number 64 stops at the Glasgow Science Centre (opposite the SECC). Buses operate at 10 – 20 minute intervals from Glasgow Central Station and Argyle Street. Further details from 0141 423 6600.

First Bus operates a City Circular numbers 89 and 90 around the city perimeter to the Science Park and the same Bell Bridge.

By taxi:

Telephone 0141 429 6666 to request a black City Cab. The cost should be around GBP 5.00 or less.

On foot:

The Clyde River Footpath can be followed from the City Centre and will take 30 – 40 minutes.

The concierges in the hotels will be helpful with local knowledge when there is more than one option for travelling to the SECC. The list on page 2 has recommendations travelling from named hotels.

Accommodation

If you have requested accommodation from our agents, the Greater Glasgow Tourist Board, you will have received full details of your hotel address and telephone number, direct from the Board.

Note that the Accommodation Bureau will be staffing a Bookings and Queries Desk in the IFLA 2002 Registration area during main registration periods. Dress Code

Please dress for comfort on all occasions. Since this is an International meeting expect a wide range of casual, formal and national dress. There are no "rules"!

General Information

There are many guides and Internet sites providing general information to ensure that you make the most of your visit to the British Isles. I provide some very brief "handy hints" here:

Electricity: In Britain the current is 240V AC. North American appliances need a transformer and adaptor. Australasian appliances need only an adaptor. Square 3-pin plugs (or travel adaptors) will be needed for all appliances.

Videos: North American participants planning to use their video cameras in Britain should note that Betamax video cassettes are less easy to obtain in Scotland, where VHS is the commonly used format. Bring a supply with you, is the advice.

Tipping and service charges: You do not have to tip bar staff but it is customary to give around 10% to taxi drivers and in restaurants. Where a service charge is included in the bill there is no need to pay an additional amount. Hotel porters should also be considered. A guide price is GBP 0.50.

Smoking: Although many Scots still smoke, the last decade has seen a dramatic change in attitude and a significant reduction in the consumption of cigarettes. Smoking is now forbidden from most public buildings, all public transport and some restaurants.
