Interlibrary Lending and Document Delivery in the Caribbean: The Perplexing Reality
Abstract
Interlending and document delivery in the Caribbean presents a perplexing picture. In the face of scarce resources one would expect this activity to be well developed, but a recent study conducted in
1989 reveals otherwise. A recent informal survey has confirmed that there has been very little change since then, in spite of improvements in communications. Reciprocal borrowing and access seem to
be the norm within territories and traditional attitudes and behavior persist. Prospects for the future are examined.

Using the Internet to Support Interlending and Document Delivery in North America
Abstract
The demand for interlibrary loan (ILL) and document supply services has increased significantly over the last decade. As a result, librarians, document suppliers, and networking experts are examining
ILL and document delivery procedures and working to find new ways to provide users with the materials they need in a timely fashion. As the Internet emerges as an accessible communications tool, lib
rarians have recognized that it can be used to support the interlending and document delivery process. As well, Internet has provided library users with improved access to library catalogues, electro
nic databases and other sources of information. This has resulted in a demand for systems that allow patrons to initiate requests at their own workstations and have the item delivered directly to the
ir home or office. This paper provides an overview of initiatives underway in North America that focus on locating information sources, sending and managing requests and delivering items electronical
ly via the Internet. These include the North American Interlibrary Loan Document Delivery (NAILDD) project, efforts by the Z39.50 Implementor's Group to develop a method for ordering items located us
ing a Z39.50-based search and The University Licensing Program (TULIP) to test the distribution of journal information in electronic form, among others. The ISO interlibrary loan protocol standard is
also described.
