The Round Table on Management is a new body set up to provide a focus for management principles and practices throughout the library world, to work with schools of library and information science and to encourage the transfer of new methodologies and technologies supporting management and information principles and practices.

It has provided a forum for discussion of management issues at its Executive Committee meetings at Havana, Cuba where interested parties from seven different countries participated in a lively discus sion on future programmes of work for the Round Table in preparation for programmes to be held at Istanbul and Beijing over the next two years. Concern was particularly expressed over the need to pro mote participation by IFLA members and the Round Table officers were preparing a membership campaign to progress this concern.

As part of an ongoing programme, the Round Table initiated a regular review of general literature on management for publication. Patricia Layzell Ward (UK) undertook the first review of management jo urnals received during the second half of 1993 focusing on mainstream issues. Themes identified in the literature included organizational change, total quality management, performance measurement, st affing issues and marketing and promotion. This first article is due to appear in IFLA Journal, No. 4 in 1994. Yearly reviews will be published in IFLA Journal.

Future Conferences

Istanbul 1995

The Round Table will hold an open session on "Marketing/Outreach" and a full-day workshop on "Managing Change". Officers of the Round Table are also involved in the planning of the Pre-Session Semina r to be held in Ankara in 1995 on "Influencing Decision Makers: Library Services in Developing Countries".

Beijing 1996

The Round Table is planning a session on "Contracting Out Library Services".

Havana Meetings

A workshop on "Justifying Your Financial Plan", held jointly with the Section of Social Science Libraries was held during the Havana Conference and attracted over 40 participants. It revealed the str ong interest in management matters, especially in developing countries and boded well for future programmes. The activities of the Round Table and the interest shown in the meetings and workshop show promise to expand the level of activity of the Round Table and to develop greater involvement by developing countries.
