Jonathan Kozol Leads List of Prominent Speakers in Boston

The IFLA Executive Board and the U.S. National Organizing Committee have lined up a list of provocative and entertaining lecturers for Boston that will focus on the issues surrounding the conference theme and subthemes. Jonathan Kozol, noted author and critic of the inequalities in American society, will be the keynote speaker at the 67th Council and General Conference of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) in Boston. Guest lecturers will be Librarian of Congress James Billington, knowledge management expert Laurence Prusak, intellectual property and copyright specialist Peter Jaszi, and preservationists Deanna Marcum, George Farr, and Ann Russell.

Jonathan Kozol's keynote address will be on Monday, August 20th. A graduate of Harvard University and a Rhodes Scholar, Kozol has championed the rights of the poor and underserved in the United States, and the need for society to provide equal access to education and resources. He is the author of award-winning books "Death at An Early Age", "Savage Inequalities: Children in American Schools", and "Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and Conscience of a Nation."

Laurence Prusak will lead off the guest lectures on Monday, August 20th with the presentation "What is Knowledge Management and why is it Important?" Mr. Prusak is Executive Director of the Institute for Knowledge Management, which is a part of IBM.
He is recognized internationally for helping organizations leverage and optimize their information and knowledge resources.

James Billington has been the Librarian of Congress since 1987. He has championed the Library's extension of its services to all Americans through the National Digital Library Program and it's "American Memory" website. He has worked to collaborate with the private sector to support the Library and it's initiatives. His lecture will be on Tuesday, August 21.

Peter Jaszi is Professor of Law at the Washington College of Law at American University in Washington, D.C., and is acknowledged expert on intellectual property and copyright. He has been asked to present issues regarding intellectual property to the U.S. Congress on numerous occasions, and is concerned about ensuring access to information in the Knowledge Age. The title of his presentation for Tuesday, August 22 will be "Defending Balance in Intellectual Property Law: the Challenge for Librarians."

Deana Marcum, George Farr and Ann Russell will present "Preservation in the USA: A Case Study in Cooperation" on Friday August 24. Deanna Marcum is President of the Council on Library and Information Resources, George Farr is Director, Division of Preservation and Access at the National Endowment for the Humanities and Ann Russell is Executive Director of the Northeast Document Conservation Center
