My participation in IFLA activities has allowed me to experience first hand the value and capacity of action of our organization. With this recognition in mind, it would be an honour for me to participate to a greater extent in the work that IFLA is undertaking in favour of libraries and information services all over the world.

From my point of view, we should concentrate our activities during the coming years on the following issues:
  • To boost libraries and information services ability to develop and conduct advocacy programs that could help to make their role more evident as key services for the inclusion of all in the Knowledge Society. Working towards an effective reduction of the digital and informational gap, among citizens and communities, could be a good way to promote a more just and open society.
  • To extend the capability of libraries and their professionals to establish alliances, not only among themselves, but especially, with other institutions with whom they share aims, seeking to increase the synergies.
  • To promote the role of libraries and information services as physical and virtual spaces where free and open access to information helps to build communities whose members are capable of utilizing for their individual and social development.
  • To increase IFLA's capacity to facilitate the participation of an increasingly wide and diverse professional community, improving the mechanisms that allow greater involvement and contribution, either with a physical or a virtual presence, of professional sectors which have not been well represented in IFLA up until now.

I would feel very honoured to have the opportunity to make my modest contribution from a position on the Governing Board during the next two years to the promotion of the mission and values of IFLA and to the development of the best strategies to achieve this.
